Iran's conditions are still seven. The deadline now has a date, and it is not Iran's.
Gulf standoffs have ended through mediators, and the timing often follows someone else's calendar.

The war between the United States and Iran began on 28 February. More than seven months later, the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas normally passes, remains largely closed.
This week, Iran's parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said the strait “will not open until our seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum are met.” That memorandum was the interim understanding reached in June. The list, first published in August and including sanctions relief and US troop withdrawals, has not changed. Iran says it can restore traffic within seven days if the conditions are met.
Washington's priority is different. In late September, President Trump rejected an Iranian ceasefire proposal, reportedly over its demand for immediate sanctions relief, and US officials continue to put the nuclear question first. Talks continue indirectly through mediators, including Qatar.
On Friday, two tankers were struck by unidentified projectiles near the strait. On Saturday, a fire broke out at a Saudi Aramco refinery in Riyadh, cause unclear. Eighteen American service members have now been killed in the war. This weekend, President Trump said the war will end “very soon,” adding: “probably right after the midterms.” The US midterm elections are on 3 November.
Why it matters
About a fifth of the world's oil and gas normally passes through the strait. While it stays shut, fuel and shipping costs stay high far from the Gulf.
How we got here
- 2026The war begins. The closure has now lasted seven months.
- 2026The Islamabad memorandum. Iran's seven conditions are written against it.
- 2026Seven conditions published. The list has not changed since, and it is what the strait is waiting on.

Usual flight path. Demands that do not move for months, talks through a third country, then a deal timed to someone's calendar. The promised date and the real one rarely match.
How this flight is different
Where the comparison stops holding
- The strait has been largely closed for seven months. Even the Tanker War never shut it.
- Eighteen American service members have been killed, so the war carries a domestic cost in an election season.
- There are no direct talks. Every message goes through Qatar or other mediators.
What to watch
- Whether the 3 November date is repeated by anyone else in the administration
- Any change, even one item, to Iran's list of seven
- Shipping insurance rates for Gulf transits, which tend to move before the diplomats do
Where the exits are
Our sources, and how sure we are
Iran's conditions and the US rejection are on the record. Who struck the two tankers on Friday, and what “right after the midterms” means, are not known.
